IRRI Digital Apps Training Reaches 2,500 Stakeholders To Boost Vietnam’s Rice Value Chain

12 November 2025, VietnamIn support of the digital transformation in Vietnam’s rice sector, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), in collaboration with the Can Tho Sub-Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, successfully conducted 38 training workshops for approximately 2,500 agricultural extension workers, farmers, and other relevant value chain actors on various digital applications designed to improve rice production.

The digital applications, developed by IRRI and its partners, are designed to support farmers in optimizing production, improving profitability, and driving environmental sustainability. The tools introduced during the training include:

  • Rice Crop Manager (RCM): A digital decision-support tool that provides field-specific nutrient and crop management recommendations to optimize inputs.
  • e-Extension Lúa Việt: A web-based platform that offers farmers and stakeholders quick access to best practices and thematic agricultural extension knowledge, including guidelines for the national One Million Hectare Program and integrated pest management.
  • EasyFarm: A matchmaking tool designed to connect farmers with other stakeholders in the rice value chain, essential for developing a functional agricultural market.

“These digital solutions provide farmers with quick access to the latest science and technical advice, which is critical for making informed decisions, reducing costs, and increasing profits in the face of climate change and market demands,” said Dr. Nguyen Van Hung, IRRI scientist and project team leader.

He emphasized that through IRRI’s continued collaboration with local partners, IRRI is dedicated to driving digital innovation towards a more resilient, profitable, and sustainable rice sector in Vietnam.

More than a hundred agricultural extension staff underwent lecture-type and hands-on training on various digital tools. These newly trained staff will serve as future resource persons to provide follow-up training sessions for farmers and cooperatives across nine districts of Can Tho City in October and November.

Ms. Pham Thi Minh Hieu, Head of the Can Tho Sub-Department of Crop Production and Protection, shared that the ultimate goal is to efficiently scale these innovative practices across the Mekong River Delta. With the merging of Can Tho, Hau Giang, and Soc Trang into one administrative provincial unit, the training program is expected to have a wider impact and reach.

A dedicated session on the EasyFarm app also brought together over 600 business representatives that provide essential farm supplies and services like fertilizer, machinery and equipment, and marketing. Participants who attended it are now eligible to be service providers for the said app.

The training series also served as a venue for gathering feedback on how to improve the tools. To improve performance and user experience, recommendations include a faster, logged chatbot and mobile app conversion for Lúa Việt, urgent stability fixes and full mobile conversion for RCM, and new user experience features like a rating system and dual-app login for EasyFarm.
