Nissan Chemical and BASF Partner to Introduce Prexio® Active Insecticide for Rice Growers in Japan

23 October 2025, JapanNissan Chemical Corporation and BASF have announced a strategic partnership to develop and commercialize Prexio® Active, a new-generation insecticide designed to help Japanese rice farmers effectively manage major rice pests while promoting sustainable farming practices.

Prexio® Active, containing the active ingredient Fenmezoditiaz (development code: NC-520), delivers long-lasting control against key rice pests such as rice planthoppers, green rice leafhopper, and chewing pests including rice water weevil, rice leaf beetle, rice stem borer, and rice skipper.

“This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture in Japan,” said Yuji Sato, Head of Agricultural Chemicals Division at Nissan Chemical Corporation. “Prexio® Active gives farmers an advanced tool to manage resistance and enhance rice productivity.”

According to Harold Bastiaans, Vice President, Global Insecticide Research and Seed Solutions at BASF Agricultural Solutions, Prexio® Active is the result of years of research in targeted, sustainable pest management. “It protects rice crops effectively while minimizing impacts on non-target species when used as directed,” he added.

Stephanie Jensen, Vice President, Crop System Rice and Portfolio Solutions Insecticides and Seed Treatment at BASF Agricultural Solutions, highlighted the product’s operational flexibility. “Prexio® Active can be easily integrated into various rice cultivation systems in Japan, including both nursery box and direct-seeded methods. Its adaptability supports the country’s diverse rice farming practices.”

Under the agreement, Nissan Chemical and BASF will develop and supply customized formulations and mixtures containing Prexio® Active to rice growers across Japan, combining global innovation with local expertise to strengthen pest control and ensure more resilient rice production systems.
