IARI Advises Nutrient Management for Lady Finger After Harvest for Continuous Productivity
22 June 2025, New Delhi: The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) has issued important recommendations for farmers cultivating lady finger (okra). After harvesting mature lady finger pods, IARI suggests applying urea at the rate of 5 to 10 kilograms per acre. This light dose of nitrogen replenishes the nutrients in the soil, encouraging further vegetative growth and promoting continuous fruiting.
Following urea application, light irrigation should be provided to dissolve the fertilizer and make nutrients readily available to the plants. Consistent soil moisture helps the crop recover quickly after harvest and supports the development of new flowering and fruiting cycles.
In addition, IARI has advised farmers to regularly monitor their lady finger crops for common pests such as mites, jassids, and hoppers. Early detection and timely control measures are crucial to preventing significant damage and ensuring healthy crop growth.
By adopting these IARI-endorsed post-harvest nutrient management practices, farmers can extend the productivity of their lady finger fields and achieve better overall yields across multiple harvesting cycles.
