YMV/SMV Virus Threat in Soybean: National Soybean Research Institute, Indore Issues Control Advisory
28 July 2025, New Delhi: The Yellow Mosaic Virus (YMV) and Soybean Mosaic Virus (SMV) pose a serious threat to soybean crops, especially during the early to mid-growth stages. These viral diseases are primarily spread by whiteflies, which also lead to stem fly infestations, affecting overall plant health and reducing yield.
To manage these challenges, the ICAR – National Soybean Research Institute, Indore has issued a comprehensive advisory for soybean farmers across India.
Key Advisory Points for YMV/SMV Control
- Uproot & Destroy Infected Plants
- Farmers are strongly advised to remove and destroy any plant or plant parts showing symptoms of YMV or SMV to prevent the spread of infection.
- Spray Recommended Insecticides
- After removal of infected parts, apply any one of the following pre-mixed insecticides for effective control of whiteflies (virus carriers) and stem fly:
- Thiamethoxam + Lambda-Cyhalothrin @ 125 ml/ha
- Betacyfluthrin + Imidacloprid @ 350 ml/ha
- Acetamiprid 25% + Bifenthrin 25% WG @ 250 g/ha
- After removal of infected parts, apply any one of the following pre-mixed insecticides for effective control of whiteflies (virus carriers) and stem fly:
- Use Yellow Sticky Traps
- Install yellow sticky traps in soybean fields to attract and trap whiteflies, reducing their population and interrupting the virus transmission cycle.
Why This Advisory Matters
Whiteflies are not only vectors of YMV and SMV but also lead to indirect damage by facilitating other secondary infections and weakening the plant structure. Similarly, stem fly larvae feed inside the stem and cause rotting and wilting, especially in young plants.
Timely implementation of this advisory from the National Soybean Research Institute, Indore can significantly reduce the impact of viral diseases and stem fly infestation. Integrated pest and disease management, starting from field monitoring to preventive spraying, is the key to a healthy and high-yielding soybean crop.
