Bilateral meeting with H.E. Fuad Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iraq

22 December 2025, RomeToday, the FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu met with H.E. Fuad Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iraq at FAO headquarters in Rome.

The Director-General welcomed the Minister to FAO headquarters and expressed his appreciation for the continued cooperation with Iraq, highlighting the historical role of Iraq being one of the founding members of the Organization.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs appreciated the growing cooperation between Iraq and FAO, building on the fruitful visit of the Director-General to Baghdad in May 2025. The Minister provided an overview of the recent political developments following the parliamentary elections in Iraq, as well as on the steps taken by the Government to achieve sustainable development and diversify its economy.

The Director-General reaffirmed FAO’s readiness to further strengthen development cooperation and appreciated Iraq’s positive political and economic developments. In addition, the Director-General reiterated FAO’s commitment to continue supporting the Government of Iraq in the transformation of its agrifood system.  

The Minister and the Director General also discussed ways for further enhancing FAO’s technical assistance to support Iraq in areas related to the agrifood sector.
