22 July 2025, EntebbeThe FAO Director-General met with His Excellency Yoweri Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda in Entebbe, during an official visit to the country.

The President welcomed the Director-General and commended him for his revolutionary leadership at the helm of FAO. He appreciated the work of FAO and its commitment to eradicate poverty and to reduce hunger and malnutrition. The President emphasized that the dialogue on food security had to change as there could not be food security without income security. The President further indicated that Africa was a big continent with many resources, but with a small population, and it was therefore imperative for African people to harness their natural resources and to change their mindset to achieve both food and income security.

The President elaborated that it was not sufficient for Africans to see food production for consumption purposes only, but to also see its potential as a resource for income generation, noting the need for a complete culture change.

The President commended FAO for its support in fighting animal diseases and pest control, and thanked the Director-General for the support provided with the development of Uganda’s Investment Plan indicating that it had helped the country to obtain private sector investment for the production of vaccines, and for coffee production.

The Director-General thanked the President for the warm welcome, agreed on the need for a shift in mindset and informed that FAO had established the Hand-in-Hand Initiative and embarked on a reform of the FAO Investment Centre, among other important initiatives, to provide platforms to address income insecurity gaps and address the three pillars of food security: food availability, food accessibility and food affordability.
