Indo-Dutch Initiative Launches Roadmap to Strengthen India’s Horticulture Sector

03 November 2025, New Delhi: A three-year Indo-Dutch collaboration aimed at advancing horticulture and protected cultivation in India has released a new roadmap to promote technology-driven and sustainable farming solutions. The initiative, called HortiRoad2India, is supported by the Government of the Netherlands, Dutch Greenhouse Delta, InnovationQuarter & Rotterdam Partners, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in India.

The programme brings together Dutch greenhouse companies, agri-technology experts, and Indian partners to develop cultivation systems suited to regional conditions. It focuses on improving resource use, post-harvest management, market access, and farmer income through practical applications of technology and training.

As part of its outreach, the initiative engaged with stakeholders in Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Punjab to understand local challenges and explore opportunities for protected cultivation. In Punjab, discussions focused on improving productivity and strengthening infrastructure, while in Bengaluru, stakeholders examined ways to connect growers to markets through reliable supply chains.

Over the past three years, the team has worked with farmers, cooperatives, and agri-entrepreneurs to identify challenges such as post-harvest losses, food safety issues, limited financing, and labour shortages. The roadmap addresses these through greenhouse technology, training, and region-specific pilot projects. The first pilot sites are planned to become operational by the end of 2026.

Desh Ramnath, India Director at Dutch Greenhouse Delta and Coordinator of the initiative, said the collaboration is expanding to include medium- and low-technology systems for different crops. He added that partnerships between Indian and Dutch start-ups are being developed to build local production units and strengthen the agri-tech network.

Tiffany Meijer, Project Manager for International Trade at InnovationQuarter and Rotterdam Partners and Co-Coordinator of the initiative, said the programme aligns Dutch technology with India’s agricultural goals to improve efficiency and long-term cooperation.

The Netherlands has extensive experience in greenhouse cultivation, while India has a large and diverse agricultural base. The collaboration aims to combine Dutch expertise with Indian scale to improve output, reduce losses, and enhance farmer income.
