Uttar Pradesh Government Bans 11 Insecticides on Paddy, CCFI Takes Legal Route
29 August 2025, Lucknow: After Punjab, the Uttar Pradesh government has also issued a notification banning the use of 11 insecticide molecules on paddy crops, including Basmati. The move has sparked fresh concerns within the agrochemical industry and among farmers who depend on these registered formulations for pest management.

The Crop Care Federation of India (CCFI), which recently secured an interim stay from the Punjab & Haryana High Court against a similar notification in Punjab, is now preparing to challenge the Uttar Pradesh notification. CCFI maintains that the bans are arbitrary, not backed by scientific data, and risk undermining both farmers’ productivity and India’s export competitiveness.
Industry representatives argue that the insecticides in question are duly registered for nationwide use and cleared by the Registration Committee after toxicological and residue evaluations. The sudden restrictions, they say, not only disrupt farming practices but also create uncertainty for exporters of Basmati rice.
The restricted pesticides include tricyclazole, buprofezin, acephate, chlorpyriphos, tebuconazole, propiconazole, thiamethoxam, profenofos, imidacloprid, carbendazim, and carbofuran.
