ISO Grants Provisional Approval to BASF’s New Herbicide Name ‘Fendioxypyracil’
15 July 2025, US: The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has granted provisional approval to the name fendioxypyracil for a newly developed herbicide by BASF SE, one of the world’s leading agrochemical companies.
The chemical identity behind the new name is ethyl 2-[2-[[3-chloro-6-[3,6-dihydro-3-methyl-2,6-dioxo-4-(trifluoromethyl)-1(2H)-pyrimidinyl]-5-fluoro-2-pyridinyl]oxy]phenoxy]acetate, listed under CAS number 2158274-50-9.
This provisional approval is part of the ISO 1750 standard process, which governs the nomenclature of pesticides and other agrochemicals to ensure uniformity and clarity in international communication. The name “fendioxypyracil” is expected to be adopted globally for use in scientific literature, trade, product labels, and regulatory filings, once it receives full ISO approval.
According to ISO procedures, stakeholders who believe the name infringes on existing trademarks or proprietary rights have until 25 December 2025 to file objections with the ISO Maintenance Agency. If no valid objections are raised within this period, the name will be formally included in the next published edition of ISO 1750.
The inclusion of fendioxypyracil will add to the growing portfolio of modern herbicides designed to support sustainable weed management in agriculture. However, BASF has not yet disclosed detailed information regarding the product’s mode of action, target weeds, or intended crop use.
Fendioxypyracil’s final approval will pave the way for its commercial introduction and potential registration in major agricultural markets globally.
