Suterra Launches BioMagnet Ruby™: Attract-and-Kill Insecticide for Spotted Wing Drosophila in California, USA
05 November 2025, California: Suterra has launched BioMagnet Ruby™, an attract-and-kill insecticide now authorized for use by California’s Department of Pesticide Regulation before the 2026 berry-growing season. BioMagnet Ruby™ is designed to control spotted wing drosophila (SWD), scientifically known as Drosophila suzukii, a pest affecting berry crops.
SWD causes significant crop losses across strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, currants, cherries, and other fruit crops in the United States. The product uses a pouch with an attractant that draws the pest to an insecticide-coated surface where it is eliminated. This method reduces the use of insecticides on plants and minimizes residue on harvested crops.
“By treating the pest instead of the plant, this method allows growers to address SWD with reduced insecticide use,” said Vijay Pai, Suterra’s Director of Business Development.
Field trials in California showed that integrating BioMagnet Ruby™ into pest management programs lowered SWD larvae by an average of 75%. The product lasts for four months and is suitable for early placement in the season to support harvest schedules. It has zero pre-harvest and re-entry intervals.
BioMagnet Ruby™ is registered in California and eight other U.S. states, including Florida, North Carolina, and Washington. It is available through Suterra-authorized crop protection distributors.
