IARI Suggests Pit Preparation for New Orchards to Control Pests and Weeds in Hot Climate
22 June 2025, New Delhi: For farmers planning to establish new orchard gardens, the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) has advised the timely digging of pits as part of orchard preparation. This process is best initiated during the hot months of June when farm activities are relatively minimal.
IARI recommends that pits should be dug to the appropriate depth and left open for a period of time. Exposing the pits to direct sunlight helps destroy harmful insect pests, soil-borne pathogens, and weed seeds naturally, thereby reducing pest pressure before saplings are planted. This practice minimizes the need for chemical treatments and lays a healthy foundation for the orchard.
By following IARI’s orchard pit preparation advisory, farmers can effectively manage soil-borne risks, improve sapling establishment, and ensure long-term productivity of the orchard.
