Bilateral Meeting with H.E. Sachiko Yamamoto, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan
25 September 2025, New York: On the margins of the 80th UN General Assembly the FAO Director-General, Dr QU Dongyu, met with Her Excellency Sachiko Yamamoto, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan.
The Director-General thanked the Vice-Minister for Japan’s steadfast and active engagement with FAO, especially for FAO’s role in supporting countries in transforming their agrifood systems, providing technical analysis and knowledge, and delivering agricultural humanitarian aid in protracted crises.
The Director-General lauded Japan’s leadership on disaster risk reduction and noted opportunities for closer collaboration as FAO’s focus was on risk analysis and anticipatory action as cost-effective ways to address the new and increasing shocks countries were facing, while also being mindful of the limited resources available for development aid.
The Vice-Minister expressed Japan’s appreciation for FAO’s science-based normative work and announced that both the Ministry for Agriculture, Foresty and Fisheries and private sector entities from Japan would be actively participating at the upcoming World Food Forum (WFF) in October at FAO headquarters. She applauded FAO’s role in bringing the private sector and research organizations together in its work and expressed her wish to see FAO work more closely with Japanese private sector companies, noting that their cutting-edge technologies were global public goods that could be shared with the world in support of global agrifood systems transformation.
