Floods Impact 1,400 Villages in Punjab: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Assures Full Support to Farmers

06 September 2025, Punjab: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday visited flood-affected regions of Punjab to assess crop damage and interact directly with farmers. During his visit to villages in Amritsar, Kapurthala, and Gurdaspur districts, he stepped into waterlogged fields and observed the extent of crop loss. Farmers informed the Minister about the severe damage to standing crops, to which he assured them that the government would provide all possible assistance.

Earlier in the day, upon his arrival in Amritsar, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria met Chouhan at the airport and handed over a detailed report on the flood situation. Senior officials also briefed him on the severity of the crisis.

According to the Agriculture Minister, nearly 1,400 villages have been severely affected since August 26, with large tracts of farmland submerged. Water from the Ravi River has inundated fields, leaving behind silt deposits that not only destroyed the current crop but also pose a challenge for the next sowing season. Chouhan described the situation as “serious and painful” but reaffirmed that the government is committed to extending maximum relief to farmers.

To evaluate the ground situation, two high-level central teams comprising officials from the Ministries of Agriculture, Rural Development, Road Transport, Power, Finance, and Jal Shakti have been deputed on the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These teams will visit the affected regions, conduct assessments, and submit reports to the central government.

Chouhan added that both the Centre and the State will carry out detailed evaluations, and a comprehensive report will be presented to Prime Minister Modi. He praised the people of Punjab for their spirit of service during the crisis and underlined that the Union Government stands firmly with Punjab and its farmers in this difficult time.
