Kashmir Farmers Achieve Over 28,000 Metric Tons Garlic Production
13 June 2025, New Delhi: Kashmir’s farmers have successfully produced 28,061 metric tons of garlic this year, cultivating the crop across 2,551 hectares. This steady production reflects the growing importance of garlic farming as a strong source of livelihood, especially in areas like Kulgam where many farmers are adopting new agricultural techniques.
Garlic remains a kitchen essential in the region, used fresh and also processed into paste, which is widely popular for cooking. The adoption of improved garlic varieties and better farming methods has significantly boosted both the quality and quantity of the produce.
In Kulgam alone, farmers harvested 1,837 metric tons of garlic during 2024-25 from 167 hectares, generating an estimated income of Rs 14.69 crore. Besides its culinary value, garlic is also valued for its medicinal properties, especially its natural antibiotic effects, which add to its market demand.
According to local farmers, garlic cultivation demands substantial labor and investment, especially for purchasing quality cloves for planting. Farmers are currently busy with the harvest, carefully setting aside portions for replanting after June 21. Once harvested, garlic is transported to various parts of the country, including Ladakh. For long-distance markets and exports, most of the garlic is dried, after which the roots are trimmed and the bulbs are graded to improve their market price.
Garlic is typically sown in November or December and harvested by late spring. The continuous support from government schemes, including subsidies and expert guidance, has helped farmers adopt better seeds and modern techniques, leading to higher productivity and better income opportunities.
