Shivraj Singh Chouhan Directs ICAR and States to Fill Vacant Posts in Agricultural Institutions on Priority
28 October 2025, New Delhi: Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has expressed serious concern over the large number of vacant posts in agricultural institutions across the country. Addressing the National Agricultural Students Conference held at Pusa, New Delhi, the Minister directed the Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to take immediate steps to fill these vacancies to ensure that the quality of agricultural education is not compromised.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan also announced that he would write to all Chief Ministers to expedite recruitment in state agricultural universities and colleges, and hold discussions with respective state agriculture ministers to resolve the issue. “The future of our agricultural students must not be compromised. Every institution must have qualified teachers and sufficient staff to deliver high-quality education,” he emphasized.
The Minister underlined that agricultural education forms the backbone of India’s rural and agri-based economy, and must be aligned with the National Education Policy guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. To make the system more responsive and innovative, Chouhan directed ICAR to form a student team to gather creative suggestions from agricultural students to improve educational and institutional systems.
He also proposed that agricultural universities and colleges be graded to encourage healthy competition and called for the study of global best practices that could be adapted to Indian conditions.
