Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Reviews Nationwide Crop Situation, Announces Punjab Flood Visit
01 September 2025, New Delhi: Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, today reviewed the agricultural situation across the country in a high-level meeting held in New Delhi. During the meeting, he was briefed on the rainfall patterns in different states and the impact of flooding in parts of Punjab. Senior officials informed the Minister about the situation of crops, reservoirs, and overall agricultural conditions.
Chouhan assured farmers in Punjab that they need not worry, as the Government of India stands firmly with all those affected by the floods. He announced that he would personally visit the flood-hit areas of Punjab in the coming days to assess the situation on the ground and meet the farmers directly. “The government will extend all possible support to the affected farming community,” he said.
Officials presented a detailed update on the kharif sowing progress, noting that the coverage so far shows encouraging growth compared to last year. The Minister was also briefed about the status of horticulture crops, particularly potatoes, onions, and tomatoes, as well as their current market prices. It was highlighted that several states have received above-average rainfall this year, which has not only benefited crops but also filled reservoirs to capacity.
Emphasizing the need for a diversified and sustainable approach to agriculture, Chouhan directed officials to encourage farmers to adopt integrated farming models alongside foodgrain cultivation. “Along with cereals, farmers must be supported in horticulture and alternative practices to maximize their income. Integrated farming and horticulture are effective pathways for balanced agricultural growth in the future,” he stated.
He also instructed for extensive awareness campaigns among farmers to promote the integrated farming model, ensuring that farmers across the country can reap greater benefits and strengthen resilience against climate and market challenges.
