CIFOR-ICRAF Facilitates Indonesia – Vietnam Knowledge Exchange on Climate and Environmental Finance

09 February 2026, Indonesia: On 13 January 2025, CIFOR-ICRAF facilitated a high-level knowledge exchange between Indonesia and Vietnam, convening a delegation from Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE) and Da Nang City authorities with the Indonesian Environment Fund (BPDLH) under the Ministry of Finance.

The meeting focused on Indonesia’s experience in managing environmental and climate finance, showcasing BPDLH’s institutional model, governance structure, and programmatic approaches. Discussions covered key areas including REDD+ financing mechanisms, benefit-sharing arrangements, community forestry, peatland restoration, and engagement with subnational governments and local communities in forest carbon initiatives.

Perspectives on carbon market readiness and national climate finance strategies were also explored. The exchange offered practical insights, best practices, and lessons learned that are directly relevant to Vietnam’s efforts to strengthen its environmental finance architecture.

CIFOR-ICRAF Vietnam is supporting climate-smart forestry, agroforestry, and mangrove carbon markets by strengthening science-based decision-making and advancing inclusive, gender-responsive policies that safeguard responsible private sector investment. Working in partnership with WWF Vietnam, CARE Vietnam and CARE Canada, and experts from the University of British Columbia and Flinders University, the portfolio strengthens Vietnam’s readiness for international carbon markets while promoting sustainable forest management, ecosystem restoration, and resilient forest-based livelihoods. The work is supported by the UBS Optimus Foundation, particularly for blue carbon initiatives, and by Global Affairs Canada through the CARE-led Carbon for Goods consortium, delivering both climate and socio-economic benefits for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, especially women.
