String Bio and CLRRI Complete First Successful Field Trial of CleanRise® in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta
02 December 2025, Bengaluru: String Bio has completed its first field trials in Vietnam in collaboration with the Cuu Long Delta Rice Research Institute (CLRRI), marking an important step in the validation of its foliar microbial biostimulant, CleanRise®, for Southeast Asian rice systems.
Validating CleanRise in the Mekong Delta
The trial, conducted during the Summer–Autumn 2025 season at CLRRI’s research fields, examined CleanRise under four treatment scenarios using two nitrogen levels—full nitrogen application and 75% of the standard dose—with and without the biostimulant. CleanRise, which enhances nutrient-use efficiency and supports systemic plant responses, has previously demonstrated methane and nitrous oxide reductions of up to 50% in Indian studies. It is compatible with multiple rice cultivation methods, including AWD, TPR, DSR and Single Drainage systems.
The Vietnam field results indicated a 12% increase in grain yield over traditional farmer practices. Importantly, plots treated with CleanRise delivered yields similar to full nitrogen application even when nitrogen fertiliser was reduced by 25%, confirming improved nitrogen-use efficiency in the Mekong Delta environment. The trial also recorded a 30–40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, alongside visible improvements in grain quality, particularly lower sterility and better grain fullness.
Alignment With Vietnam’s Low-Carbon Rice Vision
CLRRI scientists Dr. Thach and Dr. Cuong observed that CleanRise integrates smoothly with existing cultivation practices and supports Vietnam’s national “One Million Hectare Low-Carbon Rice Program.” They emphasised that the product’s ease of use and the absence of additional infrastructure needs make it suitable for adoption across diverse rice-producing landscapes in the delta.
String Bio CEO Dr. Ezhil Subbian said the data reinforces the consistent performance the company has recorded across India and strengthens confidence in deploying CleanRise at scale for Vietnamese rice farmers. CLRRI Director General Dr. Tran Ngoc Thach recommended multi-season and multi-location trials to further substantiate the findings.
Next Steps for Deployment
With the successful completion of the first field trial, String Bio is now expanding partnerships to further validate CleanRise under varied agroclimatic conditions in Vietnam. The company aims to support the country’s climate-resilient rice programme while contributing to productivity gains and improved livelihoods for smallholder farmers.
