BASF Unveils InVigor Gold: A New Canola Seed for Heat-Stressed Regions

27 June 2025, USA: In response to rising global demand for canola—driven by its growing use in food, biofuels, and industrial applications—BASF has announced the launch of InVigor® Gold, a transformative addition to its industry-leading canola seed portfolio. Engineered to perform in hotter, drier climates with lower organic soils, InVigor Gold is designed to unlock new production potential for canola growers across Canada and the United States.

Expanding Canola’s Footprint Through Innovation

InVigor Gold is a canola-quality Brassica juncea hybrid with several advanced traits: LibertyLink® herbicide tolerance, strong resistance to blackleg disease, built-in pod shatter resistance, and exceptional heat tolerance. These characteristics enable growers to cultivate canola on land that was previously considered unviable—turning fallow acres into income-generating farmland and helping to meet the surging demand for canola across industries.

According to BASF, InVigor Gold will be the first LibertyLink-tolerant, yellow-seeded canola-quality hybrid capable of being delivered to the same elevators and processors as traditional Brassica napus canola—eliminating the need for separate handling and infrastructure. This compatibility simplifies adoption for growers and streamlines the supply chain for processors.

Decades of Research and Breeding Expertise

The development of InVigor Gold marks the culmination of decades of research involving BASF scientists, breeders, and agronomists. By leveraging the company’s expansive germplasm resources and best-in-class breeding capabilities, BASF’s team has successfully introduced new canola genetics tailored for the brown soil zones of Canada and the Northern Great Plains.

“InVigor Gold represents a bold step forward for canola production,” said Bryan Perry, Head of U.S. Seeds and Traits at BASF. “This hybrid delivers yield stability and heat tolerance that outperform conventional canola hybrids in more challenging environments, helping farmers to maximize returns while expanding their growing areas.”

Proven Performance Across Trials

InVigor Gold has demonstrated strong performance in extensive field trials. Across 23 replicated trials conducted between 2022 and 2024 in Canada’s brown soil zone and the U.S. Northern Great Plains, InVigor Gold outyielded conventional canola varieties by an average of 8%. These results confirm its ability to thrive in hotter, drier climates with low organic matter—areas that have traditionally limited canola production.

Support from State Leadership

Montana Governor Greg Gianforte praised the innovation: “Agriculture is Montana’s leading industry, and we are proud of our heritage in feeding the world. Innovations like InVigor Gold help ensure our farmers can rise to meet growing global demand while boosting our economy. I commend BASF for their continued support of our agricultural community.”
