Bayer Attends The Climate Conference In The Rainforest
11 November 2025, Leverkusen: During this year’s Conference of the Parties (COP), taking place in Brazil, Bayer is once again demonstrating its commitment to tackle climate change. With “Casa Bayer” the company has created a very special place for exchange and collaboration between politicians, businesses, organizations, and civil society.
The 100-year-old historic building, usually run by a local NGO as a social education facility, was extensively restored and refurbished by Bayer so that it can continue to be used after the climate conference by the people of Belém. During COP30, the venue serves as “Casa Bayer” for more than 20 events organized by various organizations, such as the Brazilian and U.S. Chambers of Commerce, the Federation of German Industries (BDI), or the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
“Bayer has a long and deep connection with the people of Brazil, our customers and employees”, said Bill Anderson, Member and Chairman of the Board of Management of Bayer AG. “With COP30 taking place in one of our most important markets, we wanted to find a different and more lasting means of engagement, one that shows our great interest in the health and prosperity of this country and the planet. That’s why we’ve brought to life Casa Bayer, a hub for our engagement with key stakeholders and partners in Belém. It underlines that Bayer has been at home in Brazil for more than 100 years.”
Deutsche Bank, Siemens and Bayer signed an agreement with rainforest nations
As part of the COP30 Leaders’ Summit on November 7th, Deutsche Bank, Siemens and Bayer together with the governments of the Latin American countries Honduras and Suriname as well as the Coalition for Rainforest Nations signed a Letter of Intent for a new form of rainforest-based carbon credit. Symrise AG also joined the initiative. The planned development of a new sovereign carbon credit based on Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement will facilitate for the first time the direct private sector purchase of certificates from the Latin American rainforest countries to support their forest conservation. The proposed pilot transaction would be significant for channeling private finance for the protection of the Amazon rainforest.
Bill Anderson signed the agreement on behalf of Bayer together with the President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, and several federal ministers of both countries. Given the importance of this agreement, the COP30 President, André Corrêa do Lago opened the signing ceremony. The initiative complements the efforts of the recently launched Tropical Forest Forever Facility by the Brazilian government.
COP30 spotlights climate-smart innovation in agriculture
With COP30 taking place in a big agricultural market, the COP30 Presidency Team has placed a special focus on Brazilian agriculture, including a dedicated exhibition space in the so-called AgriZone at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation Embrapa.
“Over the last 30 years, Brazil has turned from a net importer of agricultural products to one of the largest agricultural exporters, significantly increasing yields”, said Rodrigo Santos, Member of the Board of Management of Bayer AG and Head of the Crop Science Division, who is attending COP30 in Belém. “This was made possible by science and innovation supporting the incredible work done by the farmers, and I’m very excited that COP30 will put a spotlight on the importance of resilient agriculture for the benefit of farmers, society and our planet.”
During the COP30 conference, Bayer will engage in multiple events and discussions spotlighting the importance of agricultural innovation to drive climate mitigation and adaptation. Such innovations include Bayer’s recently launched PreceonTM Smart Corn System which better withstands storms thereby protecting yields and Bayer’s Direct-Seeded Rice which – in comparison to transplanted rice – has the potential to reduce water use by up to 40% and greenhouse gas emissions by up to 45%.
As an important element of the strategic focus on regenerative agriculture, Bayer is driving its carbon farming programs around the world, in Latin America specifically through the platform PRO Carbono. As part of Bayer’s broader sustainability strategy, PRO Carbono aims to create a regenerative agriculture solution platform, benefiting both the environment and future generations. PRO Carbono became the largest carbon program in the region including currently around 3,000 producers in Brazil and Argentina. Together, they cultivate around 2.7 million hectares of soybeans, corn, and cotton. During COP30, the program will reach the milestone of 3 million hectares.
With PRO Carbono, Bayer offers Latin American farmers and companies the right tools developed in partnership with Embrapa to adopt regenerative practices to increase the efficiency of agricultural land and significantly reduce, capture and store carbon emissions. According to the latest data, the average carbon footprint for soybeans is 50% and for corn 55% below the national average. If management continues to improve and regenerative practices are adopted even more widely, these figures could exceed 60% for corn and 70% for soybeans.
Bayer supports the COP30 pledge to quadruple the production of sustainable fuels
A special focus of COP30 and discussions at the COP30 Leaders’ Summit will be on the decarbonization of the transport sector, especially aviation. Since there are few opportunities for electrification, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) are crucial to achieving climate targets. Shortly before COP30, Brazil has launched a Commitment for Sustainable Fuels – titled ‘Belém 4x’, with the name representing the goal to quadruple the production and use of sustainable fuels by 2035. Along with the government of Brazil, roughly 20 countries already support the initiative, with more expected to join during COP30.
Agriculture can play a key role in scaling sustainable fuels supply through both emerging and traditional crop-based feedstocks. Bayer has long been committed to innovative plant breeding in the field of low-carbon biofuels. With CoverCress and Camelina, Bayer invests in scaling low-carbon biofuel feedstocks that also create new income opportunities for farmers. Since last year, Bayer has been an active member of the Biofuture Industry Council, which brings together governments, industry and other stakeholders to advance the development of sustainable fuels.
To support the new ambition on sustainable fuels, Bayer also announced today its membership in the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance (SABA). The goal of the non-profit initiative, which includes nearly 40 companies such as Boeing, Google and United Airlines is to accelerate the reduction of CO2 emissions in global air transport by, for example, purchasing sustainable fuels, fostering investment opportunities and promoting new technologies. The initiative has developed its own registry for certificates as well as a framework for the sustainable use of SAF. In collaboration with the World Economic Forum, SABA has also defined a standard for measuring emissions and reporting in aviation. Additionally, SABA simplifies purchasing for aviation through a unified approach.
In the run-up to COP30, Bayer has also joined the new global coalition “Carbon Measures”, consisting of 19 multinational companies from diverse industries and regions such as ExxonMobil, BASF and Santander. The primary goal of the new initiative is to establish a more accurate carbon accounting framework.
Bayer ahead of schedule in achieving 100% renewable energy in China
At COP30, Bayer reconfirms its Climate Transition and Transformation Plan with the commitment to cutting its own emissions by 42% by 2030, and by 90% including its value chain by 2050. By the end of 2029, all of Bayer’s electricity will come from renewable sources.
In China, Bayer’s goal for 100% green electricity will already be achieved next year. Leveraging China’s push for renewables, Bayer will reach its target across all five production and two supplier sites four years ahead of schedule. This is expected to reduce approximately 19,835 tons of CO2 equivalent annually and save 6% in energy costs.
