Ambuja Foundation & NABARD Empower 9,700+ Farmers in Himachal Pradesh through Farming

25 August 2025, Shimla: Ambuja Foundation, in collaboration with NABARD, has undertaken efforts in Himachal Pradesh, promoting farming practices, water use, and agriculture. Since 2012, these activities have reached 9,700 farmers in 167 villages of Darlaghat and Nalagarh.

In Solan, Himachal Pradesh, Ambuja Foundation, with NABARD, engaged Deloitte to assess progress under the Watershed and Climate Proofing Projects. The study found that water harvesting structures expanded the water surface area by more than 8,200 m². Farmers’ incomes increased by 59%-137% through watershed projects and by 54%-84% through climate-proofing projects.

Traditional irrigation channels, or Kuhls, were restored. In response to the drying of Bouris (springs), the Foundation’s spring-shed management restored 27 springs. Since 2012, the Foundation has facilitated the construction of 55 check dams, 90 percolation ponds, 183 rainwater harvesting structures (RRWHs), 152 farm ponds, and 52 water storage tanks, providing water for 9,055 households and reaching 41,571 people.

Himachal Pradesh has promoted crop diversification, enabling farmers to shift from traditional crops to apples and vegetables. Three Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and two Dairy Cooperatives were set up under these projects by Ambuja Foundation and NABARD, involving 1,714 farmers, including 823 women. These FPOs handle the sale and marketing of milk, milk products, and agricultural inputs like cattle feed and equipment. Since 2015, membership in these FPOs has grown from 60 to 1,714, and turnover reached ₹376.50 lakh in 2023-24.

Pearl Tiwari, CEO, Ambuja Foundation said, “By collaborating with partners, we can achieve scale. Our approach places local people in decision-making and project management. With their participation and training, we ensure the continuation of these projects.”
