Girdle Beetle in Soybean: Symptoms, Recommended Agrochemicals, and Precautions (Kharif 2025)

28 July 2025, New Delhi: ICAR – National Soybean Research Institute Advisory for Farmers

As soybean fields enter critical growth stages during the Kharif 2025 season, the ICAR – National Soybean Research Institute  (NSRI), Indore, has issued an important advisory to control one of the most damaging soybean pests — the Girdle Beetle, also known as Chakra Bhring.

Symptoms of Girdle Beetle (Chakra Bhring) in Soybean

The Girdle Beetle damages the soybean plant by cutting or girdling the stem, usually near the base or the middle portion. This leads to wilting and drying of the plant above the girdled portion. The affected area shows a distinct ring-like cut, which is a clear indication of girdle beetle infestation. If left unchecked, this pest can significantly reduce yield and quality.

Farmers are advised to initiate control measures at the early stage of infestation. Immediate action can prevent the spread and minimize yield loss. The following agrochemicals are recommended by IISR for effective control:

  • Thiacloprid 21.7% SC – 750 ml per hectare
  • Tetraniliprole 18.18% SC – 250 to 300 ml per hectare
  • Chlorantraniliprole 18.50% SC – 150 ml per hectare
  • Emamectin Benzoate 01.90% EC – 425 ml per hectare
  • Profenophos 50% EC – 1 litre per hectare

These insecticides should be applied through foliar spray using appropriate nozzles and volume of water to ensure uniform coverage of the plant canopy.

Precautions for Effective Control

  • Early Detection: Regular field scouting should be done, especially during vegetative to flowering stages of the crop.
  • Mechanical Removal: As soon as symptoms appear, the infested plant part should be broken off and destroyed to prevent further spread.
  • Avoid Delay in Spraying: Timely spraying after observing symptoms is critical. Delayed action can lead to pest buildup.
  • Adhere to Recommended Dosage: Overuse or underuse of chemicals may reduce effectiveness or cause resistance. Always follow the recommended dose and safety guidelines.

Controlling Girdle Beetle (Chakra Bhring) in soybean is crucial for protecting crop yield during the Kharif 2025 season. Timely identification, proper chemical control, and destruction of infested plant parts are key steps recommended by ICAR – National Soybean Research Institute. Following these practices can help farmers mitigate the risk of infestation and secure a healthy soybean harvest.
