Green Gram and Blackgram Sowing Advisory by IARI: Seed Treatment and Moisture Management for Higher Yields

22 June 2025, New Delhi: The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) has advised farmers to begin sowing green gram and blackgram as the seasonal conditions are now favorable. Ensuring the correct moisture level in the soil at the time of sowing is crucial for achieving optimum germination rates. According to IARI experts, soil should be moist but not waterlogged, allowing seeds to sprout uniformly and establish strong root systems.

Before sowing, IARI recommends treating the seeds of both green gram and blackgram with crop-specific Rhizobium culture along with Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB). This bio-fertilizer combination enhances nutrient uptake, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, leading to stronger plant growth and increased yields. Proper seed treatment not only supports healthy crop development but also helps in minimizing early-stage diseases.

For green gram cultivation, IARI suggests using high-performing varieties such as Pusa 1431, Pusa 1641, Pusa Vishal, Pusa 5931, SML-668, and Samrat. For blackgram cultivation, recommended varieties include Urd Type-9, T-31, and T-39. These varieties have shown strong yield potential and resistance to major diseases and pests prevalent in various regions of India.

IARI also emphasizes the need to purchase seeds from certified agencies to ensure genetic purity and superior germination performance. Certified seeds significantly reduce the incidence of seed-borne diseases, which is a major factor influencing final yields.

By carefully following IARI’s advisory on seed selection, treatment, and moisture management, farmers can expect improved crop performance and better market returns for both green gram and blackgram during this sowing season.
