IARI Recommends Nursery Preparation for Early Cauliflower, Tomato, Chilli, and Brinjal
22 June 2025, New Delhi: The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) has advised farmers to initiate nursery preparation for early-season vegetables including cauliflower, tomato, chilli, and brinjal. Nursery management is a crucial phase for these vegetable crops as it directly affects seedling health, transplant survival rate, and ultimately crop yield.
IARI recommends the use of shed nets during nursery preparation. These shed nets help reduce the incidence of vector-borne diseases by limiting insect movement and regulating micro-climatic conditions, which are critical during the early seedling stage. The nursery area should be covered with netting at a height of approximately 6.5 feet to provide adequate protection from direct sunlight and pest infestations.
Before sowing, seeds should be treated with Thiram fungicide at a rate of 2.0 to 2.5 grams per kilogram of seed. This treatment helps prevent seed-borne fungal infections and promotes healthy seedling emergence.
Farmers are strongly advised by IARI to procure vegetable seeds from certified agencies to ensure high germination rates, disease resistance, and genetic purity. Certified seeds not only enhance yield potential but also reduce the risk of pest and disease outbreaks in the nursery and main field.
Following IARI’s detailed nursery management and seed treatment protocols will help farmers produce healthy seedlings, which form the foundation for a successful vegetable cropping season.
