ICAR–NSRI Recommends Targeted Post-Emergence Herbicides to Improve Soybean Productivity in India

Effective weed control 15–20 days after sowing is key to protecting crop health and yield potential

29 July 2025, New Delhi: The Indian Council of Agricultural Research – National Soybean Research Institute (ICAR–NSRI) has released its updated recommendations for post-emergence (POE) herbicides in soybean to be applied between 15 and 20 days after sowing (DAS). These herbicides are crucial for controlling early-stage weeds that compete with soybean plants for nutrients, water, light, and space, especially during the crop’s critical establishment phase.

By suppressing both grassy and broadleaf weeds at this stage, farmers can ensure vigorous crop development, improved plant stand, and ultimately, higher yields.

HerbicideFormulationRecommended Dose
Imazethapyr10% SL1.00 L
Imazethapyr + Surfactant70% WG + surfactant100 g
Quizalofop-ethyl5% EC0.75–1.00 L
Quizalofop-ethyl10% EC375–450 ml
Fenoxaprop-p-ethyl9.3% w/w EC (9% w/v)1.11 L
Quizalofop-p-tefuryl4.41% EC0.75–1.00 L
Fluazifop-p-butyl13.4% EC1.00–2.00 L
Haloxyfop-R-methyl10.5% w/w EC1.00–1.25 L
Propaquizafop10% EC0.50–0.75 L
Clethodim25% w/w (240 g/L) EC0.50–0.75 L
Fluthiacet-methyl10.3% EC125 ml

These herbicides are effective in managing a wide spectrum of weeds without compromising soybean plant health when applied properly.

Best Practices for Effective Application

For maximum efficiency, herbicides should be applied under suitable field and weather conditions. The soil must retain adequate moisture at the time of spraying, as dry soil can reduce absorption and effectiveness. Application is best scheduled during early morning or late afternoon when wind speeds are minimal to avoid drift and ensure targeted coverage.

The use of a flat-fan nozzle is recommended to achieve uniform spray distribution. It is also essential to strictly follow label instructions for dilution ratios and personal safety measures, including the use of protective gear during handling and spraying.

Importance of Timely Weed Control in Soybean

Weeds pose a significant threat to soybean during its initial growth stages, especially within the first three weeks of emergence. Without timely control, weed competition can lead to poor crop stand, reduced photosynthesis, and significant nutrient losses. This results in compromised yields and lower profitability for the farmer.

By implementing the ICAR–NSRI’s recommendations, farmers can reduce early weed pressure, ensure vigorous crop establishment, and improve their return on investment. These scientifically validated herbicide protocols offer a practical path to sustainable and productive soybean farming.
