Yellow Spots on Cucumber Leaves? IARI Explains the Cause and Simple Remedies
26 May 2025, New Delhi: Cucumber farming during the summer season can be a profitable venture for farmers. However, a sudden appearance of yellow spots on the leaves often raises concern. While the issue might seem minor at first glance, it is actually an early warning sign of a viral infection in the crop. Experts at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) have identified the cause and recommended both organic and chemical solutions to tackle the problem effectively.
Yellow Spots on Leaves – Not Just a Minor Issue
According to IARI scientists, the emergence of yellow patches on cucumber leaves is typically the first sign of a virus infection. If left untreated, the infection can quickly spread across the field, stunting plant growth and significantly affecting yield.
Step One: Go for Organic Treatment
IARI advises that at the very first sign of yellow spots, farmers should spray a 1% neem oil solution across the entire crop. Neem oil is a potent organic pesticide that helps control the insect vectors responsible for spreading the virus.
Chemical Solution When the Infection Spreads
If the infection has already advanced and organic measures seem insufficient, chemical treatment becomes necessary. IARI recommends spraying Imidacloprid at a dose of 60 to 80 ml mixed in 200 liters of water per acre. This insecticide effectively eliminates virus-carrying pests like whiteflies and thrips, stopping the disease from spreading further.

- Identify and respond to the disease at an early stage.
- Use a balanced approach with both organic and chemical treatments.
- Always wear protective gear like masks and gloves during spraying.
By staying informed and taking timely action, farmers can not only protect their cucumber crops from disease but also ensure better yield and increased profits.
