IARI Pusa Advisory: Curling Leaves in Papaya Crop? It Could Be Papaya Ring Spot Virus
16 June 2025, New Delhi: Farmers cultivating papaya across several regions of the country are currently facing a common problem — curling and yellowing of leaves. According to experts from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Pusa, these symptoms could be an indication of an infection caused by the Papaya Ring Spot Virus (PRSV).
The experts explain that the virus initially causes the leaves of the papaya plant to turn yellow, followed by an inward curling of the leaves. This weakens the plant significantly and leads to a drastic decline in yield potential. If not addressed in time, the entire crop may be at risk.
Solution: Spraying Jeev Ras
To combat this issue, IARI Pusa has recommended the use of Jeev Ras (Humid Acid) as a control measure. As per the institute’s advisory, farmers should mix 500 milliliters of Jeev Ras in 200 liters of water and spray it across one acre of crop area. This treatment helps not only in controlling the spread of the virus but also enhances the plant’s immunity against diseases.
IARI experts have advised farmers to regularly monitor their papaya fields. At the first sign of any abnormal changes in the leaves — such as yellowing, curling, or spotting — farmers should initiate treatment immediately.
The institute emphasizes that timely detection and management not only protect the crop but also contribute to better yields and higher income for the farmers.
