HDFC Bank CSR Programme Reports 15,289 Water Structures Across Rural India

16 April 2026, Mumbai: HDFC Bank said its flagship CSR initiative, Parivartan, has built and restored 15,289 water structures across India over the past decade, covering 10,430 villages and supporting nearly 14.92 lakh rural households. The bank also stated that more than 950 villages have gained access to safe drinking water through community purification systems under its health and hygiene programmes.

According to the bank, the water assets created under the initiative include farm ponds, check dams, jal minars for decentralised water distribution, and rainwater harvesting systems installed at schools, health centres, and homes. In parts of central India, lift irrigation systems and recharge wells were developed to improve water access for tribal farming communities under the WATER initiative.

For drinking water access, the programme has deployed mini purification plants using UV, RO, and multi-stage filtration technologies based on local water quality assessments. These systems have been supported with community storage tanks, tap connections, and monitoring mechanisms.

The bank said the programme combines water infrastructure with farm support measures such as micro-irrigation systems, shade net houses, bio-input resource centres, and multilayer farming practices. It added that these interventions have helped expand irrigated area, reduce dependence on irregular rainfall, and improve crop productivity for smallholder farmers. Training has also been provided to community water user groups on water budgeting and efficient usage.

Community participation remains a key component of the programme. Village Action Plans have been prepared with Women’s Self-Help Groups and Water User Associations to align projects with local priorities. The bank said GIS-based planning tools are being used for site selection, while convergence with government schemes such as MGNREGA has been pursued to avoid duplication and improve outcomes.

Nusrat Pathan, Head of CSR at HDFC Bank, said the initiative has focused on local water needs ranging from ice stupas in Himalayan regions to purification systems in villages lacking clean tap water. She added that the programme’s impact is reflected in improved farm output and better public health outcomes linked to safer drinking water.

In FY 2024-25, Natural Resource Management was introduced as a dedicated focus area under Parivartan, bringing together water conservation, afforestation, soil health, and solar energy initiatives. The bank said the programme aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on clean water, sanitation, and climate action.

Parivartan is the umbrella CSR platform of HDFC Bank and works across rural development, education, skill development, healthcare, financial inclusion, and natural resource management. As of March 2025, the bank reported that the programme had reached more than 10.56 crore people across 28 states and 8 Union Territories. In FY 2024-25, the bank said it spent Rs. 1,068.03 crore on CSR activities under Parivartan.
