Updated EPA Guidance Supports John Deere Efforts to Keep Customers Productive in the Field

Whether it’s a farmer racing against a weather forecast, a contractor working to meet a deadline, or a forestry crew managing a job site, unexpected downtime can disrupt plans and impact productivity.
That’s why John Deere is rolling out software updates across agriculture, construction and forestry equipment that give customers more time to address DEF and SCR-related issues while maintaining machine productivity. The updates are being implemented in response to revised guidelines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and reflect customer feedback about the need for more practical repair timelines, less severe power derates, and improved DEF quality diagnostics.
Built Around Customer Feedback
Previous regulatory requirements meant certain DEF and SCR-related faults could eventually limit machine operation to idle in as little as four hours after a fault was detected. While those systems met EPA emission requirements in place at the time, customers often need more time to diagnose issues, obtain parts, coordinate service and safely finish the work already underway.
John Deere worked with regulators and industry stakeholders to advocate for a more practical approach that would support emissions compliance while reducing unnecessary disruption for customers.
When EPA guidance expanded the options available to equipment manufacturers, John Deere was ready. Software releases began in November 2025 and continue today as updates are made available across eligible equipment platforms.
More Time to Get the Job Done
One of the most meaningful changes for customers is the amount of time available before a machine reaches an operating restriction.
Previously, certain DEF and SCR-related faults could result in a machine going idle after approximately four hours. Under the updated software strategy, customers now have approximately 20 hours to address the issue before reaching an operating restriction.
In practical terms, that can mean a farmer has time to finish a day’s work before scheduling service, a contractor can complete a critical task before returning equipment for repair, or a forestry crew can better plan maintenance without losing productivity in the middle of a job.
The updated software also delivers improved DEF quality diagnostic performance and revises the fault-related operating restriction from idle-only to approximately 30% of rated engine power now being available.
Progress Underway
By the end of 2026, John Deere expects nearly 80% of the software updates in scope to be available to customers, with the remaining updates expected to roll out through 2027. John Deere is proactively pushing software updates to connected machines. To receive these updates, customers must accept them when prompted. Updates can also be installed through a John Deere dealer or through Operations Center™ PRO Service.
The result is simple: customers now have more time and flexibility to diagnose problems, schedule repairs, order parts and finish critical work.
