Tinda (Indian Round Gourd) Leaves Turning Yellow? Farmers Advised to Watch Out for Downy Mildew Disease

Advisory for Indian Farmers from Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI)

16 June 2025, New Delhi: An important advisory for farmers cultivating Tinda (Indian round gourd)! If the leaves of your crop are suddenly turning yellow, do not ignore it. According to experts from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Pusa, this could be due to Downy Mildew, a fungal disease that spreads rapidly in vine crops like Tinda.

What is Downy Mildew?

Downy Mildew is a contagious fungal disease that initially appears as yellow spots on the leaves. Over time, it spreads across the entire leaf surface, severely impacting the plant’s ability to conduct photosynthesis. As a result, crop growth is stunted and yields can drop significantly.

Treatment Recommendations

IARI Pusa has advised farmers to take the following measures to protect their crops from this disease:

Spraying Ridomil:

At the first signs of infection, prepare a solution of 300 grams of Ridomil fungicide mixed in 200 liters of water and spray it over one acre of the affected field. This treatment has proven effective in controlling the spread of the disease.

Additional Preventive Measures

  • Maintain proper spacing between plants to ensure adequate air circulation.
  • Immediately remove and destroy infected leaves from the field.
  • Avoid waterlogging, as the disease thrives in high moisture conditions.

Urgent Advisory for Farmers

IARI Pusa has warned that Downy Mildew can spread very quickly and, if not treated in time, may severely damage the entire crop. Farmers are advised to monitor their fields regularly and take timely preventive action.

During spraying, always wear protective clothing and gloves. For more information and technical assistance, farmers should contact their nearest Krishi Vigyan Kendra (Agriculture Science Center) or IARI Pusa.
