
Bilateral Meeting with H.E. Hanna Katrín Friðriksson, Minister of Industries of Iceland
15 October 2025, Reykjavík: On occasion of his official visit to Iceland, the Director-General met with Her Excellency Hanna Katrín Friðriksson, Minister of Industries of Iceland.
The Minister welcomed the Director-General and commended the advancements that FAO had made under his leadership, particularly in broadening cooperation in areas such as youth and women’s empowerment. The Minister informed that Iceland had prioritized progress in promoting equality emphasizing the importance of good gender data across the Icelandic business and government sectors.
The Minister further recalled Iceland’s rapid development, highlighting the country’s transition from a recipient to a provider of international aid, referencing the stages of development including the advent of modern fish vessels to the adoption of geothermal technology as examples of staging posts for Iceland’s economic buoyancy. The Minister also underscored Iceland’s commitment to sustainability and its readiness to share knowledge and expertise globally. Finally, she referred to FAO’s Four Betters as a useful approach and stressed that climate action and sustainability required international solidarity.
The Director-General commended Iceland’s success across many key areas, recognizing the determination and advanced education level of the population, as well as good governance, which were the foundation stones for this success. He encouraged Iceland to continue sharing its experiences and expertise globally, and affirmed FAO’s willingness to continue serving as a bridge for international cooperation.
The meeting also marked the signing of a new five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FAO and Iceland, expanding collaboration to include marine ecosystems, social inclusion, gender equality, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and land restoration. In particular, the Minister welcomed the close collaboration on land and water and reaffirmed Iceland’s commitment to supporting FAO’s work, including the secondment of technical officers in the fields of blue transformation and marine ecosystem protection.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to continue strengthening collaboration to advance the transformation of global agrifood systems, promoting gender equality, and strengthening international cooperation for climate resilience and equitable development.
