Bilateral meeting with H.E. Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, President of Mongolia

04 December 2025, RomeFAO Director-General, Qu Dongyu, met today with H.E. Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, President of Mongolia, at the Organization’s headquarters in Rome on the margins of the 179th Session of the FAO Council. H.E. Badamsuren Myagmarsuren, Minister for Food, Agriculture and Light Industry of Mongolia also attended the meeting.

The Director-General welcomed H.E the President of Mongolia and his delegation, commended Mongolia’s initiative to establish the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) 2026, and praised the country’s leading role and continuous support in this process. The Director-General also underscored the Country’s importance and contribution to global food security, reiterated FAO’s commitment to continue supporting the country’s efforts to advocate for nomadic civilization, to achieve a more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood system.

The President thanked the Director-General and congratulated him on the 80th anniversary of the Organization, highly praised the Organization’s contribution and support to the agricultural development of Mongolia, underlined the critical role of FAO in the current changing global context, and expressed the country’s steady support to FAO in fulfilling its core mandate.

Both sides agreed on further cooperate in areas such as land and soil health, transboundary disease prevention and human resource and capacity building, to further enhance the transformation of the agrifood system of Mongolia, in line with country priorities and FAO’s vision of the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life – leaving no one behind.During the meeting, the Director-General received the Friendship Medal of Mongolia – one of the highest honours bestowed by the Government of Mongolia – by decree of the President in recognition of FAO’s outstanding contribution to the agricultural development of Mongolia.
