Bilateral meeting with H.E. Martha Viviana Carvajalino Villegas, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development of the Republic of Colombia

22 October 2025, RomeFAO Director-General, Dr QU Dongyu, met today with Her Excellency Martha Viviana Carvajalino Villegas, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development of Colombia, at the Organization’s headquarters in Rome.

The Director-General welcomed Minister Carvajalino, praising Colombia’s cultural and natural richness, including its diverse range of vegetables, flowers, and food.  Reflecting on this, he mentioned the recent inauguration of the FAO Museum and Network, which explores the ways in which food and agriculture have influenced human history around the world.

The Minister lauded the success of the 2025 World Food Forum and FAO’s 80th Anniversary celebrations, which took place at the Organization’s headquarters the previous week. She recognized the value of Colombia’s participation in the Forum, from the flagship events to the activities that showcased the country’s products, such as coffee and cacao, and its progress in product diversification and rural transformation. The Minister thanked the Director-General for inviting a Vallenato youth group to perform Colombian folk music at the closing event of the World Food Forum.

Moreover, Minister Carvajalino lauded the partnership with FAO concerning pivotal development initiatives, including the Tumaco Port project, which would enable the nation to broaden its development vision towards the Pacific coast. She also thanked the Director-General for the Organization’s technical support in preparing for the Second International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development, which Colombia will host in February 2026. Finally, the Minister discussed her country’s progress in rural transformation, underscoring the importance of promoting responsible land tenure governance and its link to sustainable agrifood systems.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to the Alliance for Rural Development and Food Security, based on FAO’s mandate and the country’s priorities, with the aim of leaving no one behind.
