Minister Han Jun Meets with Canadian Agricultural Minister

20 January 2026, China: Han Jun, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, met with Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food of Canada, in Beijing on January 15. They exchanged views on key areas and the direction of future China–Canada agricultural cooperation. 

Minister Han emphasized the vital role of agricultural cooperation in the economic and trade relations between China and Canada. He noted that the two countries have a long history of fruitful cooperation in agriculture, which provides a solid foundation and great potential for further deepening cooperation. China seeks to work with Canada to implement, through concrete actions, the consensus reached between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Mark Carney, fully leverage bilateral agricultural cooperation mechanisms, promote the resumption of the China–Canada Joint Committee on Agriculture, continuously advance constructive dialogue, and further strengthen agricultural technology exchange and economic and trade cooperation, to achieve more mutually beneficial outcomes. 

Minister MacDonald spoke highly of the foundation and potential of agricultural cooperation between the two countries. He stated that being part of the delegation led by Prime Minister Mark Carney to China fully demonstrates Canada’s commitment to deepening practical cooperation with China to jointly promote agricultural development and food security. He also said that he looks forward to working with China to convene a meeting of the China–Canada Joint Committee on Agriculture at an early date to further address mutual concerns and raise the level of bilateral cooperation in agriculture. 

Tao Huaiying, Chief Veterinary Officer of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA), and Pan Wenbo, Chief Agronomist of MARA, attended the meeting.
