Alligator Weed (Alternantheraphiloxeroides) Or “Nalighas/dodhughas” Emerging As A Major Threat To Crops In Himachal Pradesh

23 July 2025, Palampur: Agricultural scientists from Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, Palampur have raised concern over Alternantheraphiloxeroides, commonly known as Alligator Weed, and locally referred to as “NaliGhas” or “DodhuGhas” in Himachal Pradesh. This invasive weed is fast becoming a serious menace to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in the state.

This season, Alligator Weed has been reported spreading rapidly in paddy fields and other kharif crops, posing significant challenges for farmers. Experts from University highlight that its aggressive growth, high tolerance to various environmental conditions, vegetative reproduction, short juvenile period, and exceptional ability for propagule dispersal make it extremely dangerous. The weed outcompetes native plants, competes with crops for nutrients, water, light, and space, and reduces yields due to its allelopathic effects.

Farmers across the state have reported severe infestation in paddy fields this season, while its spread in maize, soybean, vegetables, and other kharif crops has exacerbated concerns.

Management Strategies to Control Alligator Weed:

To address the growing threat of Alligator Weed, experts from Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, Palampur, have recommended specific management strategies tailored to different conditions. For maize and rice fields, the application of selective herbicides such as 2,4-D Ethyl Ester or Na salt @ 1000 g/ha, Metsulfuron methyl @ 46 g/ha, and Carfentrazone @ 25 g/ha has been suggested to effectively suppress the weeds growth. In non-cropped and fallow areas, Glyphosate @ 1000 g/ha has proven highly effective for eradicating the weed.

Agricultural scientists have advised farmers to adopt these control measures in a timely manner to curb the rapid spread of this invasive species. Early intervention is critical not only for protecting crop yields but also for preventing the weed from establishing dominance in agricultural and natural ecosystems. Farmers are encouraged to consult local KrishiVigyanKendras (KVKs) or extension specialists for proper application techniques to ensure safe and effective management.
