Amit Shah Inaugurates National Turmeric Board; Announces ₹7,000 Price Rise in Next 3 Years
30 June 2025, New Delhi: In a significant step aimed at strengthening the income and global reach of turmeric farmers, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the headquarters of the National Turmeric Board in Nizamabad, Telangana. Addressing the event, he announced that turmeric prices are expected to rise by ₹7,000 per quintal over the next three years, offering a major economic boost to farmers and enhancing India’s position in global turmeric markets.
Addressing a Long-Standing Demand
Amit Shah emphasized that the creation of the National Turmeric Board fulfills a long-pending demand of turmeric farmers, particularly from Nizamabad and surrounding districts, who have been cultivating the crop for decades without direct access to international markets. “This will now change,” he said, adding that the board will act as a bridge between local farmers and global trade.
Turmeric to Get Global Platform
The National Turmeric Board will manage packaging, branding, marketing, and export of turmeric, ensuring farmers receive fair prices without middlemen. Shah mentioned that while turmeric prices in 2025 were around ₹18,000–₹19,000 per quintal, the government’s goal is to increase it to ₹25,000–₹26,000 per quintal within three years.
Targeting $1 Billion in Exports by 2030
Shah stated that the Central Government aims to achieve $1 billion in turmeric exports by 2030. To reach this milestone, India will promote the medicinal properties of turmeric in international markets, improve packaging to meet global standards, and focus on upskilling farmers.
Telangana Districts to Become Turmeric Hubs
Highlighting the production capacity of Telangana, Shah said that districts such as Nizamabad, Jagtial, Nirmal, and Kamareddy will be developed into global turmeric trade hubs. In the year 2023–24, turmeric was cultivated across 3 lakh hectares, yielding 10.74 lakh tonnes.
Training and Technical Support for Farmers
Apart from trade facilitation, the Turmeric Board will also provide training on harvesting, processing, quality standards, and GI tagging, helping farmers meet export quality norms.
Support for Organic Farmers
Shah also mentioned the government’s initiatives to support farmers through the creation of National Cooperative Export Limited (NCEL) and National Cooperative Organic Limited (NCOL), enabling direct market access for organic turmeric growers.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy and Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar.
