Central Government Approves Procurement of Moong and Urad under Price Support Scheme in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announces major support for pulse growers
24 June 2025, New Delhi: In a significant decision aimed at supporting pulse farmers, the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has approved the procurement of summer moong and urad under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) in Madhya Pradesh, and summer urad in Uttar Pradesh.
The announcement was made following a high-level virtual meeting chaired by Mr. Chouhan with the Agriculture Ministers of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The meeting focused on outlining the implementation strategy for procurement, ensuring transparency, and safeguarding farmers’ interests. Senior officials from the Ministry, NAFED, NCCF, and concerned state departments also participated.
Procurement with Accountability and Transparency
Mr. Chouhan emphasized that while the procurement would place a considerable financial burden on the Central Government, the decision reflects the unwavering commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to support the farming community.
“To ensure that the intended benefits reach the farmers, procurement must be done in a transparent manner, and purchases should be made directly from registered farmers,” he said. “This will help reduce the role of middlemen and ensure that farmers receive the full value of their produce.”
He further directed officials to use robust and modern technologies for farmer registration and monitoring. If required, the number of procurement centers should be increased to ensure smooth operations. Mr. Chouhan underscored that any procurement-related irregularities, especially in storage and warehousing, must be addressed proactively.
State-Level Coordination and Oversight
The procurement approval for Madhya Pradesh came after a proposal from the state government was reviewed and discussed at the Ministry. With this approval, both moong and urad will now be purchased from the state’s farmers under the PSS. Uttar Pradesh has also been cleared for the procurement of urad under the same scheme.
Mr. Chouhan urged the respective state agriculture departments to ensure robust monitoring and adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards corruption or inefficiencies in the system. He stated, “Only with transparency and accountability in operations will the real benefits of the scheme reach the grassroots.”
Commitment to Farmer Welfare
Addressing concerns about irregularities in storage operations, Mr. Chouhan instructed the departments to strengthen checks and avoid any lapses that might lead to farmer grievances.
He also assured the Agriculture Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Surya Pratap Shahi, that the central government would provide all necessary support in the implementation of the PSS and work closely with states to protect the interests of farmers.
The meeting was attended by Madhya Pradesh’s Minister for Farmers’ Welfare and Agriculture Development, Mr. Adal Singh Kansana; Uttar Pradesh’s Agriculture Minister, Mr. Surya Pratap Shahi; Union Agriculture Secretary Mr. Devesh Chaturvedi; and other senior officials.
