Centre Clears Tur Procurement in Maharashtra, ₹2,696 Crore MSP Outlay
27 January 2026, New Delhi: The Government of India has approved the procurement of 337,000 metric tonnes of tur (pigeon pea/arhar) from Maharashtra under the Price Support Scheme (PSS). The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The procurement at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) is expected to involve an expenditure of approximately ₹2,696 crore.
Coordination with Maharashtra Government
During the meeting, the Union Agriculture Minister held detailed discussions with Maharashtra’s Minister for Marketing, Mr. Jaykumar Rawal, on procurement-related arrangements. Directions were issued to key implementing agencies, including NAFED and NCCF, along with concerned state officials, to ensure smooth execution of the procurement process.
Mr. Chouhan stated that while the decision would place a significant financial burden on the central government, the move reflects the government’s firm commitment to safeguarding farmers’ interests under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He emphasised that procurement must be carried out directly from farmers to minimise the role of intermediaries and ensure that the benefits of MSP reach genuine producers.
NAFED and NCCF Directed to Ensure Transparent Procurement
The Union Minister instructed NAFED and NCCF to conduct the procurement in close coordination with the Maharashtra government. Stressing the importance of transparency, he called for the use of modern and efficient technologies for farmer registration and procurement operations, enabling accurate tracking and timely payments.
Expansion of Procurement Centres for Farmer Convenience
To improve accessibility for farmers, Mr. Chouhan directed officials to increase the number of procurement centres wherever required. He underlined that farmer convenience should remain a priority and that procurement operations must be transparent, efficient, and farmer-centric.
The meeting was attended by Maharashtra’s Minister for Marketing Mr. Jaykumar Rawal, Union Agriculture Secretary Mr. Devesh Chaturvedi, and other senior officials from the central and state governments.
