Chhattisgarh: Farmers in Jashpur Turn to Summer Groundnut Cultivation for Higher Profits

16 June 2025, RaipurIn Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district, farmers are increasingly shifting from traditional paddy cultivation to summer groundnut farming. This transition is not only boosting their incomes but also encouraging them to adopt modern and scientific farming methods.

From Paddy to Groundnut: A Success Story

Gurunarayan, a farmer from Durgapara village in Bagicha block, has embraced this new direction in farming. Owning 3.303 hectares of land, he earlier grew paddy during both the Kharif and Rabi seasons. “Paddy required a lot of water, and despite the high input costs, the returns were not very satisfying,” Gurunarayan shared. “The profit margins remained limited due to rising production expenses.”

Encouraged by local agricultural extension officer Ravi Roshan Toppo, Gurunarayan began groundnut cultivation on 0.200 hectares of his land. Under the National Food Security Mission (Oilseeds), the Agriculture Department provided him with 20 kilograms of groundnut seeds free of cost. Along with this, he received micronutrients, fertilizers, pesticides, and continuous technical support.

Changing the Farming Landscape with Profits

“Thanks to regular monitoring and timely advice, my crop is growing very well,” said Gurunarayan. “With favorable market prices for groundnut, I am expecting a better profit this season.”

According to agriculture officials, summer groundnut farming requires less water and involves lower cultivation costs while offering good yields. This crop not only helps maintain soil fertility but also strengthens the farmers economically.
