Coordinate to Reclaim water Land and Promote Shrimp Farming- Agriculture Minister
28 May 2025, Chandigarh: Haryana Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Fisheries Minister, Mr. Shyam Singh Rana has directed officers to work in coordination to reclaim saline-affected land in the state and promote shrimp farming, with the goal of improving one lakh acres of land.
Mr. Rana was presiding over a joint meeting of the Fisheries and Agriculture Departments held here today. During the meeting, he also reviewed the ongoing work related to land conservation.
The Minister first reviewed the progress under the Agriculture Sankalp Abhiyan and efforts to bring waterlogged and saline areas under fisheries. He directed the officers concerned to encourage shrimp farming by constructing ponds in waterlogged areas. This would turn the challenge of waterlogging into an opportunity by utilizing saline water productively. He directed both departments to jointly formulate a specific plan for this purpose.
The Minister was apprised that around 240 acres of waterlogged land has been identified across various districts, out of which 124 acres have already been brought under fisheries through the construction of ponds. Further action is underway in this direction.
Mr. Shyam Singh Rana also reviewed in detail various land and water conservation activities, including, land improvement through vertical drainage, subsurface drainage, and gypsum, construction of check dams, recharge wells, rooftop rainwater harvesting systems, water catchment trenches, rejuvenation of traditional water sources and underground pipelines and promotion of micro-irrigation for cotton farming. Besides this he also reviewed the work of construction of permanent ponds and water quality testing along with Soil Health Cards
Mr. Shaym Singh Rana directed the officers concerned that the target of reclaiming one lakh acres of land as proposed in the budget must be achieved, and that concerned departments should prepare and implement a detailed action plan accordingly.
The Minister was apprised that the soil testing laboratories in the state have a capacity to test 30.40 lakh samples. Under the “Har Khet Swasth Khet” campaign, soil health reports are being sent to farmers via WhatsApp to enable nutrient-based farming.
Mr. Shyam Singh Rana said that under the leadership of Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, India has become the fourth-largest economy in the world.
He directed officers to encourage diversification by adopting modern technologies in agriculture, horticulture, dairy, and fisheries. If India excels in these sectors, it can soon become the third-largest economy globally, said Mr. Sham Singh Rana.
