Fertilizer Availability Remains Adequate in Tamil Nadu: JP Nadda

10 February 2026, New Delhi: The Government of India has stated that the availability of major fertilizers—Urea, DAP, MOP and NPKS—has remained adequate in Tamil Nadu during the Kharif 2025 season and the ongoing Rabi 2025–26 season.

For Rabi 2025–26 (as of February 2, 2026), fertilizer availability in the state has exceeded assessed demand. Against a pro-rata requirement of 4.97 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of Urea, availability stood at 6.06 LMT, while actual sales were recorded at 4.77 LMT. During the Kharif 2025 season, Urea availability was reported at 6.07 LMT against a requirement of 4.37 LMT.

Zero Tolerance on Sub-standard Fertilizers

The government reiterated its zero-tolerance approach towards the manufacture and sale of sub-standard fertilizers under the Fertilizer (Control) Order, 1985. Since April 2025, enforcement agencies across the country have carried out 4,11,350 inspections, issued 15,024 show-cause notices, and registered 783 FIRs against defaulters.

In Tamil Nadu, authorities conducted 20,727 inspections during this period, resulting in the suspension or cancellation of 50 licenses and the registration of five FIRs. Enforcement actions were reported from districts including Salem, Erode, Thoothukudi, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur, where quantities of spurious Urea, DAP and complex fertilizers were seized.

Monitoring Supply and Distribution

To ensure uninterrupted availability in upcoming agricultural seasons, fertilizer allocations are made based on demand assessments by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The movement of all major subsidised fertilizers is monitored through the Integrated Fertilizer Management System (iFMS) to track supply and prevent shortages.

Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Jagat Prakash Nadda shared this information in a reply to a starred question in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
