Fourth Training Course for Army and Navy Personnel commenced at Agriversity

09 December 2025, PalampurChaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya Palampur, inaugurated its fourth long-duration training course on “Protected Cultivation and Value Addition of Vegetable and Horticulture Crops,” for JCOs and equivalent rank officers of Indian Forces at the Directorate of Extension Education on December 8, 2025. The programme is sponsored by the Directorate General of Resettlement (DGR), Ministry of Defence, under its resettlement and skill development initiative for defence personnel. The programme was formally inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Dr. A.K. Panda in the presence of statutory officers, faculty members, and the training coordinators. A batch of 20 JCOs and equivalent rank officers, including 14 from the Indian Army and 6 from the Indian Navy, has enrolled in this specialized course, which will continue until March 27, 2026.

In his inaugural remarks, Vice-Chancellor Dr. A.K. Panda commended the participation of defence personnel and encouraged them to take full advantage of the university’s modern infrastructure, laboratories, and field facilities. He emphasized that protected cultivation and value addition offer immense potential for sustainable income generation and entrepreneurship, especially for personnel transitioning to post-service livelihoods.

Director Extension Education, Dr. Vinod Sharma, delivered the welcome address, extending warm greetings to all dignitaries, faculty members, and the distinguished group of Army and Navy trainees. He informed that this is the University’s fourth long-duration training programme for defence personnel and highlighted the increasing significance of protected cultivation, scientific crop management, and value addition in modern agriculture. Dr. Sharma noted that university is consistently provided high-quality, need-based skill development programmes and reaffirmed the Directorate’s commitment to supporting national services through advanced agricultural training.

Course Incharge Dr. Lav Bhushan provided an overview of the curriculum, which includes greenhouse technologies, nursery management, climate-resilient practices, post-harvest handling, and value addition techniques. The inaugural event concluded with a reaffirmation of the University’s dedication to empowering defence trainees through scientific, practical, and industry-aligned agricultural training, strengthening their prospects for sustainable post-service ventures.
