Gujarat Mangoes Gain Global Fame: 3,000 Tons Exported in Five Years, Gir Kesar Variety in High Demand
21 July 2025, New Delhi: Gujarat’s delicious mangoes are making waves across the world. According to data shared by the state government, a total of 3,000 tons of mangoes have been exported from Gujarat over the last five years. Notably, the financial year 2024-25 alone accounted for 29 percent of the total exports — the highest share recorded so far.
Gujarat Mangoes Reach America and Africa
Between 2019-20 and 2024-25, Gujarat exported mangoes to countries including the United States, South Africa, and several others. The Gir Kesar mango variety, which received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2011, has played a significant role in boosting exports. In 2024-25, Gujarat exported 856 tons of mangoes, providing substantial income benefits to local farmers.
Steady Growth in Production
Mango production in Gujarat continues to rise steadily. Out of the total 471,000 hectares under horticulture crops in the state, about 177,000 hectares (roughly 37%) are dedicated exclusively to mango cultivation. Districts such as Valsad, Navsari, Gir Somnath, Kutch, and Surat are the primary mango-growing regions.
21 Percent Increase in Production
Gujarat produced 917,000 tons of mangoes in 2021-22, which increased to 1,115,000 tons by 2023-24 — marking a nearly 21 percent growth. Although the data for 2024-25 production is yet to be released, the upward trend continues.
Expansion of Mango Cultivation Area
Alongside production growth, the area under mango cultivation expanded by 8.4 percent between 2021-22 and 2023-24, reaching a total of 177,514 hectares. Navsari, Valsad, and Gir Somnath were the leading districts in production for 2023-24, yielding 217,000 tons, 209,000 tons, and 112,000 tons respectively.
Amreli District Leads in Productivity
Amreli district recorded the highest productivity, with an average yield of 8.16 metric tons per hectare. In 2023-24, Amreli produced 60,600 tons of mangoes from 7,430 hectares.
Irradiation Plant in Bavla Boosts Export Quality
Near Ahmedabad, the Bavla-based Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation operates a gamma radiation processing plant that has treated 805 metric tons of mangoes from 2019 to 2025 for export. This irradiation facility is approved by the USDA-APHIS (United States Department of Agriculture – Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service), enabling smooth exports of mangoes and pomegranates to the US market.
