India Secures Long-Term DAP Fertilizer Supply from Maaden as JP Nadda Concludes Strategic Visit to Saudi Arabia
14 July 2025, Riyadh: Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers and Health & Family Welfare, JP Nadda, concluded a three-day visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia focused on strengthening India’s fertilizer security and bilateral cooperation in the chemicals sector. The high-level Indian delegation included the Secretary, Department of Fertilizers, and senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs.
A major outcome of the visit was the signing of long-term agreements between Saudi Arabia’s Maaden and Indian fertilizer companies – Indian Potash Limited (IPL), KRIBHCO, and Chambal Fertilisers (CIL) – for the supply of 3.1 million metric tonnes of Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) annually for five years starting FY 2025-26. The agreement also includes a provision for a five-year extension based on mutual consent.
India imported 1.9 million MT of DAP from Saudi Arabia in FY 2024-25, marking a 17% increase over the 1.6 million MT in FY 2023-24. With the new agreements, DAP imports from Maaden are set to rise significantly, helping ensure long-term price stability and supply reliability for Indian agriculture.
In Riyadh, JP Nadda met with Saudi Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, Bandar bin Ibrahim Al Khorayef, to discuss expanding partnerships in fertilizers, petrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Discussions also included encouraging Indian Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) to invest in Saudi Arabia’s fertilizer sector and inviting reciprocal Saudi investments in India.
The ministers announced the formation of a joint working group, led by the Secretary (Fertilizer) from India and the Vice Minister for Mining Affairs from Saudi Arabia, to explore long-term collaboration in fertilizer production, investment, and research – particularly in customized and alternative fertilizers suited for Indian conditions.
JP Nadda also held discussions with Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, Saudi Minister of Energy and co-chair of the Economy and Investment Committee of the Strategic Partnership Council, to reinforce the economic partnership between the two nations. The visit included meetings with Abdulaziz Al-Rumaih, Vice Minister of Health, and visits to Maaden’s phosphate production facility at Ras Al Khair.
