India Sets 2025–26 Foodgrain Production Target at 362.5 Million Tonnes, Confirms Surplus Seed Availability

17 September 2025, New Delhi: At the ‘National Agriculture Conference – Rabi Abhiyan 2025’ held in Delhi, Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that the Government of India has set a target of 362.50 million tonnes of foodgrain production for 2025–26, compared to 341.55 million tonnes last year.

The Minister highlighted that India produced a record 353.96 million tonnes of foodgrains in 2024–25, marking a 6.5% increase (21.66 million tonnes) from the previous year. The country surpassed its production target by 12.41 million tonnes, achieving record harvests in rice, wheat, maize, groundnut, and soybean. This growth, he said, will ensure better foodgrain availability for every citizen and enhance national food security.

Chouhan noted that the Rabi Conference reflects the spirit of ‘One Nation – One Agriculture – One Team’, bringing together agriculture ministers and officials from States and Union Territories. Unlike earlier editions, the 2025 conference was extended to two days to allow detailed discussions and development of State/UT-specific roadmaps.

Six thematic groups deliberated on key issues: climate resilience, quality seeds and inputs, horticulture, natural farming, strengthening Krishi Vigyan Kendras and extension services, and coordination of centrally sponsored schemes. Special focus was given to increasing productivity of pulses, oilseeds, and integrated farming systems.

The Minister said that alongside foodgrain output, fruit and vegetable production has also shown significant growth. On the flood situation, he assured that the Centre is fully supporting affected States including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Assam, and Haryana, and that timely insurance settlements under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana are being ensured.

On input supply, Chouhan confirmed that seed availability stands at nearly 25 million metric tonnes against the requirement of 22.9 million tonnes for Rabi sowing. He also assured that fertiliser demand arising from increased rainfall and higher sown areas will be fully met in coordination with the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers.

Announcing the launch of the second phase of ‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan’ from October 3, he said more than 2,000 teams of scientists, officials, and progressive farmers will visit villages to provide guidance, strengthening the Centre’s ‘Lab to Land’ initiative.

The Minister stressed the need for greater focus on pulses and oilseeds to match the self-sufficiency achieved in rice and wheat. Crop-wise reviews have already begun for cotton and soybean, and targeted steps will be taken to raise yields of Rabi crops.

On tackling counterfeit agro-inputs, Chouhan pointed to ongoing raids in Rajasthan and other States, noting that strong Centre–State action will continue against those selling spurious seeds, pesticides, and fertilisers.
