India’s Organic Food Exports at 3.68 Lakh Tonnes Valued at USD 665.97 Million in 2024–25
18 December 2025, New Delhi: India’s exports of organic food products have shown fluctuations over the past five years, both in terms of volume and value, reflecting changing global market conditions and certification-related challenges. According to data provided by certification bodies accredited under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) on TraceNet, organic food exports stood at 3.68 lakh metric tonnes valued at USD 665.97 million in 2024–25.
In 2020–21, India exported 8.88 lakh metric tonnes of organic food products worth USD 1,040.95 million. This was followed by a sharp decline in 2021–22, when exports fell to 4.60 lakh metric tonnes valued at USD 771.96 million. The downward trend continued in 2022–23, with exports at 3.13 lakh metric tonnes worth USD 708.33 million, and further dipped in 2023–24 to 2.61 lakh metric tonnes valued at USD 494.80 million. However, 2024–25 witnessed a partial recovery in both volume and value.
The decline in India’s organic food exports during this period has been attributed to sluggish demand in global markets, trade uncertainties, geopolitical tensions, temporary regulatory changes in importing countries, and issues related to certification and market perception. The United States and the European Union remain the key destinations for Indian organic products. For exports to the US, certification under the USDA National Organic Program (USDA-NOP) is mandatory, while exports to the EU require certification by EU-accredited certification bodies. In 2022, the delisting of some certification bodies in the EU reduced the available certification capacity, increased transaction costs, and adversely impacted exports, particularly of processed organic foods.
To support exporters, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA)provides financial assistance for the development of export infrastructure, quality improvement, and market development. APEDA also implements the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), which covers accreditation of certification bodies, organic production standards, promotion of organic farming, and marketing. Under NPOP, operators involved in production, processing, and trading are certified according to their scope of operation. In addition, APEDA conducts training, capacity-building programmes, and export promotion activities for organic stakeholders across the country.
The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) is also supporting the organic food sector through schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY), Prime Minister Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME), and the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industries (PLISFPI). These initiatives focus on creating modern infrastructure, strengthening supply chains from farm gate to retail, reducing wastage, increasing processing levels, generating employment, and enhancing exports, including organic food products.
