Mechanisation Eases Rice Farming in India: Chhattisgarh Farmer Earns Extra ₹1.2 Lakh with Paddy Transplanter

20 July 2025, Raipur: In India’s eastern-central state of Chhattisgarh, modern farming tools are transforming the way farmers cultivate rice. Supported by government subsidies under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAM), local farmers are increasingly shifting from traditional methods to mechanised farming practices.

Government Support Makes Modern Machines Affordable

Chohaldas Sahu, a farmer from Kesla village in Dongargaon block of Rajnandgaon district, recently purchased a paddy transplanter worth ₹900,000 (approx. USD 10,800) with the help of a generous subsidy of ₹410,000 (approx. USD 4,900) provided by the state government. This assistance enabled him to adopt the advanced technology with minimal financial burden.

Transplanting Now Faster and More Accurate

With the paddy transplanter, Sahu says transplanting rice has become significantly faster and more precise. Previously, planting required considerable manual labour and time. Now, the same task can be completed in just one day across four acres. This has resulted in major savings in both labour and time.

Better Plant Spacing, Reduced Disease, and Higher Yields

The machine ensures uniform spacing between plants, promoting healthier crop growth and reducing the risk of diseases. As a result, Sahu has observed improved yields—averaging 31 quintals of paddy per acre. Additionally, the reliance on labour has decreased, thereby lowering overall production costs.

Earning More by Renting Out the Machine

Sahu has also turned his machine into a revenue stream. By offering transplanting services to neighbouring farmers at ₹3,500 per acre, he has cultivated 40 acres and earned an additional income of ₹120,000 (approx. USD 1,440).

Expanding Mechanisation Across the District

Beyond paddy transplanters, the Chhattisgarh government is also subsidising a wide range of modern equipment—including tractors, threshers, harvesters, drones, sprayers, seed drills, and mulchers. These initiatives are aimed at increasing productivity and easing the burden on farmers.

In Rajnandgaon district alone, a total subsidy of ₹3.31 crore (approx. USD 400,000) has been disbursed to farmers for machinery purchases in the 2024–25 period. This wave of mechanisation is helping Chhattisgarh farmers transition from traditional to technology-led farming, boosting both income and efficiency.
