PM Modi Inaugurates Mizoram Rail Line, Opens New Market Access for Farmers
16 September 2025, Mizoram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Mizoram on September 13, inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for development projects worth over ₹9,000 crore. Although bad weather prevented him from reaching Aizawl, the Prime Minister addressed the gathering via videoconference from Lengpui Airport, where he underlined how the new projects would benefit farmers and rural communities of Mizoram.
Calling it a historic day, the Prime Minister announced that Aizawl was officially placed on India’s railway map with the completion of the Bairabi–Sairang rail line, built at a cost of over ₹8,000 crore. He flagged off three express trains—Sairang–Delhi Rajdhani, Sairang–Guwahati Express, and Sairang–Kolkata Express. According to him, this connectivity is not just a transport link but a “lifeline of transformation” that would make it easier for farmers to transport Mizoram’s ginger, turmeric, bananas, and bamboo products to larger markets across the country.
Modi highlighted that better railway and road links would ensure timely supply of food grains, fertilizers, and essential commodities to Mizoram while also opening new opportunities in tourism and agri-business. “Farmers and businesses in Mizoram will now be able to reach more markets across the nation,” he said.
As part of road infrastructure expansion, the foundation stones were also laid for the Thenzawl–Sialsuk Road and the Khankawn–Rongura Road, which are expected to directly benefit horticulture farmers, dragon fruit growers, paddy cultivators, and ginger processors. These projects are likely to reduce travel time, improve access to processing plants, and strengthen market linkages for the farming community.
The Prime Minister further noted that Mizoram has an important role in India’s Act East Policy and the North East Economic Corridor. He pointed out that the upcoming Sairang–Hmawngbuchhuah rail line would connect Mizoram with the Bay of Bengal through South East Asia, boosting cross-border trade in agricultural products.
Emphasizing the importance of “Vocal for Local,” Modi also praised the recognition of Mizoram’s organic produce, particularly ginger and turmeric, and reiterated the government’s support in helping farmers access national and international markets.
