Rice Farmers in Jorhat Receive Seed and Crop Advisory Support through Institutional Collaboration
23 December 2025, Jorhat: An awareness and farm-support programme for rice farmers was organised in Jorhat district on the occasion of National Farmers’ Day, with participation from the Jorhat Agriculture Department, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Jorhat, and the Assam Rice Research Institute (ARRI), Titabar. The programme was supported by Cairn Oil & Gas, part of the Vedanta Group, as part of its rural development activities in the district.
During the programme, farmers were provided access to rice seed varieties Ranjit and Bahadur, along with organic inputs such as vermicompost. Officials and scientists present at the event interacted with farmers on crop management practices, seed selection, and input use aligned with local agro-climatic conditions.
According to information shared during the programme, nearly 100 farmers cultivating around 110 acres of land participated in the initiative. Agriculture department officials stated that the selected rice varieties have shown stable performance in Assam when cultivated under recommended practices.
The programme also included facilitation of farmer enrolment under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, aimed at extending crop-insurance coverage for the ongoing season. The enrolment process was carried out with support from the local agriculture department.
Field-level observations during the season indicate improvement in crop establishment in participating fields. However, officials noted that final yield data will be available only after harvesting, following which KVK, Jorhat is expected to carry out an assessment.
The Jorhat programme builds on an earlier seed distribution and awareness activity conducted in the Naginijan area earlier this year, where farmers were introduced to improved rice varieties and organic inputs. Officials involved stated that future activities will depend on post-harvest assessments and institutional review.
