Tomato Prices Remain Low Despite Festive Demand: All-India Wholesale Rate Falls 47% Year-on-Year in October 2025
15 October 2025, New Delhi: Tomato prices across India continued their downward trend in October 2025, even as the Diwali festive season boosted consumption demand. The all-India average wholesale price stood at ₹2,583 per quintal, nearly 47% lower than ₹4,901 recorded in October 2024, according to data reported by Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs).
Interestingly, while demand for vegetables typically rises ahead of Diwali due to household consumption and food processing activities, tomato prices this year have stayed low across major states, indicating ample supply and high market arrivals.
Festive Demand Meets Surplus Supply
The month of October — coinciding with Diwali and the wedding season — usually witnesses higher kitchen and catering demand, particularly for tomatoes and onions. However, in 2025, despite a surge in retail movement, prices failed to recover due to strong arrivals from the Kharif harvest.
National Overview
Wholesale tomato prices remained nearly stable month-on-month, averaging ₹2,583 in October versus ₹2,582 in September, but significantly lower than last year’s levels. Most states recorded a 45–65% annual drop, driven by better yields, lower transport bottlenecks, and improved weather conditions compared to 2024.
State-Level Trends
Maharashtra: Sharpest Annual Decline
In Maharashtra — India’s top tomato producer — wholesale prices slipped to ₹1,140 per quintal, down 9.95% from September and a steep 66.6% lower than October 2024.
Uttar Pradesh: Prices Fall Despite High Consumption
In Uttar Pradesh, average wholesale prices stood at ₹2,034 per quintal, registering a 14% monthly decline and 54% fall year-on-year.
Madhya Pradesh: Weak Price Realisation
Tomato prices in Madhya Pradesh dropped to ₹1,322 per quintal, down 13.5% month-on-month and 31% year-on-year.
Karnataka: Prices Stabilise at Lower Level
Karnataka recorded ₹1,176 per quintal, among the lowest in the country, showing a slight 1.6% rise over Septemberbut still 47% below last year.
Haryana and Punjab: Northern Markets See Pressure
In Haryana, prices fell 5% from last month to ₹2,190 per quintal, while Punjab recorded ₹1,970, down 5.4%.
Regional Highlights
- Gujarat saw a marginal 1% monthly rise, reaching ₹1,763 per quintal, though still 64% below 2024 levels.
- Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir recorded prices above the national average, at around ₹2,550 per quintal, due to higher transportation costs and limited arrivals.
- Southern states like Telangana (₹1,342) and Tamil Nadu (₹2,354) reported moderate declines, keeping prices below last year by over 50%.
- In contrast, Nagaland (+17.4%) and Meghalaya (+10.6%) were outliers, witnessing month-on-month price hikes due to localized shortages.
Market Outlook
With the Rabi sowing season approaching, wholesale prices are expected to remain stable or soften slightly through November, depending on rainfall patterns and crop movement. However, retail markets may see modest festive price adjustments in urban areas closer to Diwali as demand peaks temporarily.
Overall, the tomato market in 2025 reflects a return to balance after last year’s extreme price volatility, though low farm-gate prices remain a concern for growers across key states.
